The situation: A death on the jobsite is the worst case scenario for most companies and executives. You lose a part of your team, and the devastation can be immense. What you do in the minutes and hours and days following the tragedy can guide how well you will recover.
What works: Compassion and empathy. Immediate communication to all appropriate audiences; providing resources to those impacted, like counselling and financial assistance. Consider bringing in clergy, and holding an all-hands discussion.
The takeaway: Regardless of the circumstances, you have to show compassion to the family and friends, your team and the community. Words can only go so far, you will be judged on your actions. It’s ok and encouraged to say your sorry, regardless of what legal counsel says.
